Average Medifast Weight Loss In The First Week: What Is It?

I recently had someone contact and ask how much weight she could expect to lose in her first week of medifast.  Essentially, she  was in a big hurry to lose weight quickly and she felt that each pound counted.  So she wanted to know what she might expect in her first week.   There can be a wide range of results in the first week.  However, most of the time, dieters approach or get into ketosis at some point in their first week.  This typically brings about some weight loss (as can the loss of “water weight”) which means that many people see some weight loss in their first seven days.

Now if you’ve been on any weight loss blogs, I’m sure you’ve seen claims of people losing a huge amount of weight within their first week.  And you may have seen people claiming to have gained some weight.  I always take these claims with a grain of salt and think that the more accurate statement is usually somewhere in between.  (I’m not saying that it isn’t possible to lose tons of weight or even to gain, I just think that it’s probably the exception rather than the rule. ) Medifast clinical studies and the company’s guidelines indicate a range of anywhere from 2 – 5 pounds per week in the first couple of weeks, with common sense telling you that the average being around 3.  After those first few weeks, you’re looking at around 1 -2 pounds per week. (Men tend to lose more as do people who have more weight to lose.)

Sometimes people ask me if they should skip meals or exercise a lot in the first week just to “get things going.”  I don’t see the need for this.  In the first week of this diet, you’ll often be figuring out how things work and adjusting to eating six times per day.  When you use the diet as designed, the idea is that you get into ketosis and begin rapidly burning fat.  But in order for this to happen and to go off without a hitch, your body needs fuel (thus the need to eat as regularly as 6 times per day.)  But think about it. If you skip meals or over exercise, you potentially jeopardize this whole process, not to mention that you potentially make your experience a more difficult one than it needs to be.

I understand that you want to make sure that you lose as much weight as possible on the first week of medifast, but the diet is designed to have quick and decisive results.  You don’t really need to do anything but follow the diet as it’s designed.  If you truly want to lose as much weight as possible on the first week, my best advice would be to eat all six meals and to follow the guidelines for your “lean and green” meals.  You don’t want to add in high carb sides because doing might delay ketosis and you want for that to happen as soon as possible because that’s when the weight loss starts.  As far as exercise, you can move more as that feels comfortable to you, but there’s really no need to overdo it.
